Lakshmana

As the younger brother of Rama, Lakshmana is Rama’s most loyal companion.  In fact, much of Lakshmana’s dharma rests squarely in his service to Rama.  This is most noticeable in his decision to accompany Rama into exile, leaving his wife and the perks of royal life behind.

At the same time, Lakshmana’s dharma is not restricted to obligations to Rama.  When Sita is duped by Ravana to believe that Rama calls to her in need of dire help following his search for the golden deer, Lakshmana attempts to convince Sita that it is a trick.  Sita denies Lakshmana’s warning, and unable to rescue Rama herself, commands Lakshmana to seek Rama on her behalf, despite Rama’s desire for Lakshmana to watch over Sita during his search.  This subplot is crucial, as Lakshmana’s eventual decision problematizes dharma as an immutable code given that the faculties of reason may best resolve the dilemma at hand.
